London Marathon Events Expands International Footprint With Frankfurt Marathon Acquisition

London Marathon Events Acquires Frankfurt Marathon Organizer Motion Events

London Marathon Events has acquired Motion Events GmbH, the organizer of the Frankfurt Marathon, in a move that marks its first major step into international event ownership.

The acquisition represents a significant milestone in LME’s long-term growth strategy, expanding its portfolio beyond the UK and into one of Europe’s established marathon markets.

Strengthening a European marathon network

The Frankfurt Marathon will now sit alongside the London Marathon as part of the newly announced European Marathon Classics series, which aims to connect major endurance events across the continent under a shared framework.

Motion Events also organizes the Gutenberg Half Marathon Mainz, further extending LME’s reach within Germany’s running ecosystem.

Leadership continuity during transition

Founder Jo Schindler will remain involved as Race Director through 2026 and continue in a board role to support the transition. Meanwhile, Holger Kranz, formerly Head of Sponsorship at Frankfurt Tourism, has been appointed CEO to lead the organization moving forward.

The existing team will remain in place, ensuring operational continuity while integrating LME’s broader strategic direction.

Growth through participation and community

London Marathon Events plans to leverage its experience to grow participation across demographics, with a particular emphasis on encouraging children and young people to engage in running.

The organization also intends to collaborate with local running clubs in Frankfurt to increase access and participation among underrepresented communities, aligning with broader goals of inclusivity and grassroots development in sport.

A strategic international milestone

According to LME CEO Hugh Brasher, the Frankfurt Marathon is a world-class event with strong heritage and growth potential. The acquisition is described as a defining moment in LME’s international expansion, combining expertise from both organizations to elevate the event’s future trajectory.
