Keir Starmer has reportedly written to TNT Sports urging the broadcaster to make the UEFA Champions League final available free-to-air for viewers across the United Kingdom.
The British Prime Minister, who is also known as a passionate Arsenal FC supporter, argued that football fans should not be forced to pay additional subscription fees to watch one of the sport’s biggest events.
In the letter dated May 22, 2026, Starmer described the Champions League as “the biggest club football competition in the world” and stressed that the final should remain accessible to everyone regardless of which club is involved.
“The UK is the home of football,” Starmer wrote. “I firmly believe that the final of this competition should remain free to watch, whether Arsenal have made it or not.”
The Prime Minister also highlighted concerns about affordability, saying hardworking supporters should not have to “fork out for a subscription” to watch a match of such magnitude.
Starmer further emphasized that football finals are moments that bring supporters together in homes and pubs across the country, calling the event bigger than any one club.
The letter comes amid growing debate in the UK over access to major sporting events and subscription-based sports broadcasting.
Social media reactions noted that Starmer’s intervention does not necessarily mean the Champions League final will automatically be added to the UK’s protected free-to-air events list, but it significantly increases public pressure on TNT Sports ahead of the final.
