David Beckham has become the latest football icon to join Fortnite, with Epic Games unveiling a new Icon Series collection inspired by the former England captain’s career and enduring global appeal.
The collection arrives after Beckham spent much of the summer back in the spotlight during the FIFA World Cup, highlighting how the former midfielder remains one of football’s most commercially powerful figures more than a decade after his retirement.
Players will be able to use Beckham as a fully playable character, with several different looks reflecting different stages of his public image.
The collection includes a formal “Club Owner” outfit, a traditional football kit featuring his iconic No. 7 shirt and a third style recreating Beckham’s tattooed appearance. The tattoos react during gameplay, glowing brighter with each elimination.
Beckham joins a growing list of football personalities to appear in Fortnite as Epic Games continues to use sport to expand the game’s appeal beyond traditional gaming audiences.
Football has gradually become an important part of Fortnite’s commercial strategy, with the game having previously collaborated with clubs, tournaments and some of the sport’s biggest names, including Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The partnership gives Epic Games another high-profile sports collaboration at a time when football’s global reach is at an all-time high.
Few players are better suited to such a crossover than Beckham. His career took him to some of football’s biggest clubs, including Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, while his celebrity status has always extended far beyond the pitch.
That commercial influence has continued through his ownership role at Inter Miami, ambassadorial work and a long list of global sponsorship deals.
For Fortnite, Beckham is more than another playable character. He is another example of how the game is increasingly positioning itself as a global entertainment platform where sport, fashion, music and popular culture intersect.
