A new era for motorcycle racing has officially begun as Dorna Sports formally changes its name to MotoGP Sport Entertainment SL. The rebranding follows the completion of Liberty Media’s acquisition of the promoter, marking the end of the iconic “Dorna” name after more than three decades in the industry.
Liberty Media finalized the $3.1 billion purchase of an 84% stake in the company last July. Under the new structure, MotoGP now sits within the Formula One Group business unit, alongside the world’s premier motor racing series.
Key changes and future outlook:
- Leadership Shift: Former F1 Group head Chase Carey has stepped in as the new president, replacing William Jackson.
- Long-term Stability: The promoter maintains its commercial rights for the MotoGP series through 2060.
- Series Updates: While focusing on core growth, the league recently suspended the all-electric MotoE series indefinitely, though it remains open to future sustainable technologies.
This transition signals a shift toward a more entertainment-focused business model, mirroring the global expansion strategy Liberty Media successfully applied to Formula 1.
