Inside Deportivo’s Populous-Designed Museum Revolution

In the modern football economy, a stadium museum is often a stagnant collection of dusty silver and faded jerseys. But in A Coruña, Deportivo is betting on a “hybrid” future. Opening today at the Estadio Municipal de Riazor, the new club museum isn’t just a place to look at the past—it’s a living hospitality engine designed by the global architecture giants at Populous.

The project, led by Populous’ Experience Studios, represents a growing trend in sports architecture: the “adaptive hospitality” model. Rather than leaving museum spaces empty for 340 days a year, the Riazor’s new cultural landmark is designed to pivot seamlessly between an interactive exhibition and a high-end match-day VIP zone.

Experience First: A Journey Through Galician Pride

The narrative of the museum is built on three pillars: sporting glory, Galician social impact, and institutional evolution. To ensure the space felt “authentic” rather than “corporate,” Populous collaborated with local historians and fan groups to weave Deportivo’s identity into the very fabric of the building.

The result is a sensory experience. Visitors don’t just see trophies; they move through an immersive soundscape and technological touchpoints that mirror the club’s journey from a local Galician institution to a European contender. “We shaped a culturally grounded experience,” says Kevin Luckhurst, director of Experience Studios. “It’s about strengthening local pride through a unified experiential language.”

The Match-Day Pivot: Hospitality Meets Heritage

The real architectural feat, however, is the space’s ability to transform. On match days, the display casework and curated galleries become the backdrop for one of the most unique hospitality environments in Spanish football.

The transition is designed to be seamless. One moment, a fan is studying a 1940s kit; the next, they are in a VIP dining area where the history of the club acts as the decor. This dual-use strategy maximizes the stadium’s “Return on Experience” (ROE), catering to a broad spectrum of fans—from the history buff to the corporate guest looking for a curated dining concept.

Global Expertise, Local Heart

The project was a joint effort between Populous’ international Experience Studios and the local Populous España team. By combining global stadium-tech expertise with an in-depth analysis of the club’s context in A Coruña, they have created a “living museum” that projects Deportivo’s identity into the future.

As the club looks to climb back to its former heights on the pitch, it now possesses the infrastructure off the pitch to match its grandest ambitions.
