Cleveland Browns Begin Mass Excavation for New Huntington Bank Field

The Cleveland Browns have started mass excavation for their new $2.4B stadium in Brook Park. Opening is set for the 2029 NFL season.

The “Super Theater” is officially under construction. Heavy machinery moved onto the Brook Park site this week to begin digging an 80-foot-deep hole that will eventually house the foundation for the Browns’ new home. This phase represents the most significant physical work to date on the 176-acre site, located just 15 miles from their current lakefront stadium.

A “Super Theater” Design

Designed by HKS, the 67,500-seat venue is being built with a “fan-first” philosophy. Key design elements include:

  • The “Super Theater” Concept: A versatile seating bowl (7,500 to 75,000 capacity) designed to host everything from NCAA Final Fours and international soccer to massive stadium concerts.
  • Proximity to the Field: The stadium will feature the closest seating in the NFL, with the first row just 16 feet from the action.
  • Translucent Roof: Inspired by Cleveland’s historic atriums, the roof will provide protection from the elements while maintaining a natural light feel.

Economic and Community Impact

The project is a joint venture between AECOM Hunt and Turner Construction. A core pillar of the development is its commitment to the local economy:

  • Local Workforce: A minimum of 75% of total workforce hours will be performed by local residents.
  • Mixed-Use District: Led by Lincoln Property Company, the area will feature over 1,500 apartments, 500 hotel rooms, and 300,000 square feet of retail and dining space.
  • Year-Round Destination: The district is designed to be active 365 days a year, with seasonal features like summer farmers’ markets and winter ice skating.

Important Dates

  • April 30, 2026: Official Groundbreaking Ceremony.
  • Spring 2027: Construction begins on the surrounding mixed-use district.
  • Spring 2029: Targeted opening for both the stadium and Phase 1 of the development.
