The Milan derby continues to prove its immense value to the Italian football economy. The recent clash between AC Milan and Inter Milan at the San Siro has officially set a new record for the highest ticket revenue in Serie A history, bringing in over €8.7 million.
A Historic Night at San Siro
The match drew more than 75,500 spectators, effectively filling the San Siro to capacity. The overwhelming demand for tickets pushed total gate receipts near the €9 million mark, a figure never before reached in the Italian top flight. This performance surpasses the previous record of €8.65 million, which was also set during a Milan derby back in November 2025.
An Economic Powerhouse
Beyond this single match, the rivalry has become a vital economic asset for Italian football. Since the 2011-2012 season, league encounters between the two clubs have generated more than €113 million in total ticket revenue.
For both AC Milan and Inter, a single edition of the derby can represent approximately 10% of their annual matchday income. This underscores why the fixture remains the primary financial engine of the championship, allowing the clubs to sustain aggressive pricing strategies even as they seek to modernize their infrastructure.
Strategic Stadium Ownership
The financial significance of the venue was recently cemented when, last November, Inter and AC Milan completed the purchase of the San Siro stadium from the Municipality of Milan for €197 million. The acquisition, managed through the joint venture Stadio San Siro S.p.A., was backed by major international financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan, alongside domestic partners Banco BPM and BPER Banca.
