The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has initiated plans to build a new state-of-the-art cricket stadium in Navi Mumbai, with a proposed capacity of 100,000 spectators.

The association has begun the process of acquiring land for the project and is currently in discussions with local authorities. MCA president Ajinkya Naik recently met officials from the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) to explore potential sites, with the area near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport emerging as a preferred location.

The proposed venue is expected to significantly boost cricket infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Currently, the city relies heavily on Wankhede Stadium, which has a seating capacity of just over 33,000—far below demand in one of the world’s largest cricket markets.

Officials described the project as a landmark development for Maharashtra’s sporting ecosystem. Beyond hosting major international matches, the stadium is expected to support grassroots development and provide greater exposure for emerging talent.

If completed, the stadium would join the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as one of the largest cricket venues globally, reinforcing India’s position as a central hub for the sport.

The project is still in early stages, with further approvals and land allocation processes pending. State authorities are expected to play a key role in accelerating clearances in the coming months.
