A Controlled Exit, Not a Crisis: Netball Australia Turns the Page

There’s a certain clarity to well-timed departures in sport. Stacey West stepping down as CEO of Netball Australia feels less like disruption and more like design.

After 16 years within the organisation—and just over two years at the helm—West exits at a moment when the sport is not searching for stability, but accelerating from it. “A labour of love,” she called the role. The subtext is clearer: she’s leaving with the platform built, not still under construction.

Momentum, quantified

This is not a federation in recovery mode. It’s one with leverage.

A five-year broadcast agreement with Nine, record-breaking attendances in Suncorp Super Netball, and a 13% jump in viewership this season point to something increasingly rare in modern sport: organic growth.

West’s tenure aligned commercial expansion with cultural positioning—pushing initiatives from grassroots to elite pathways, including the First Nations Black Swans and a refreshed NetSetGo ecosystem.

No vacuum at the top

Transitions tend to expose fragility. This one doesn’t.

Mark Falvo steps in as interim CEO from April 27, while continuing to lead Netball World Cup Sydney 2027. It’s a dual-role structure, but a deliberate one—keeping commercial strategy and event delivery under a single lens heading into the sport’s biggest near-term milestone.

Chair Liz Ellis framed it simply: continuity over reinvention.

The long game is already in motion

West’s most consequential move may outlast her tenure. The 10-year “Made in Netball” strategy, launched in November 2025, sets a clear runway through to 2035—less about short-term wins, more about structural permanence.

At the elite level, the Australia national netball team remain the benchmark. That consistency matters. Dominance, in this context, isn’t just about medals—it’s about maintaining relevance in an increasingly crowded global sports market.

What comes next

Netball Australia will now begin the search for a permanent CEO. But the immediate objective is already defined: convert momentum into global visibility ahead of 2027.

Because this isn’t a reset.
It’s a handover at speed.
