Pharmaceutical company AbbVie has become the first-ever official pharmaceutical partner of the Major League Baseball (MLB), marking a landmark league-wide collaboration.
“Striking Out Cancer†initiative expands

The initiative includes a unique donation structure:
- $20 donated for every strikeout across MLB games
- Additional contributions for special achievements like no-hitters and perfect games
- Expected annual donations of around $800,000
The model reflects global health data highlighting the widespread impact of cancer.
Strong visibility across MLB
As part of the deal, AbbVie will gain major exposure across:
- Broadcast and digital platforms
- Social media channels
- Key events like the MLB All-Star Game
- The “MLB at Field of Dreams†event
- Wild Card Series (presenting sponsor)
Sports and social impact combined
AbbVie VP Tracie Haas emphasized the goal of using baseball’s reach to raise awareness and drive meaningful conversations about cancer.
This partnership highlights a growing trend where major sports leagues integrate social impact initiatives with commercial sponsorships.
