AFL and EnergyAustralia Power a New Era of Sustainability at Marvel Stadium

The Australian Football League has taken a decisive step toward a cleaner future, sealing a landmark partnership with EnergyAustralia that reshapes how one of the country’s most iconic venues is powered.

Under a five-year agreement, EnergyAustralia becomes the official energy partner of both the AFL and AFLW competitions, as well as Marvel Stadium in Melbourne—one of the busiest multi-purpose venues in the southern hemisphere.

Renewable backbone through long-term agreements

The deal builds on the AFL’s formal commitment, announced last year, to transition its major operations to renewable electricity. Since early 2026, energy consumption at Marvel Stadium and AFL House has been matched with renewable supply through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), supported by Large-Scale Generation Certificates.

A key pillar of this strategy is the Golden Plains Wind Farm in Victoria, operated by TagEnergy. The project is tied to a 10-year renewable PPA signed with EnergyAustralia in 2024, ensuring long-term clean energy flow into AFL operations.

Cutting emissions, scaling impact

For the AFL, this transition is more than symbolic. By shifting its two largest operational hubs to renewable electricity, the league expects a substantial reduction in Scope 2 emissions—those linked to purchased energy. The move strengthens its broader ambition to shrink its carbon footprint and align with global sustainability standards in sport.

Beyond the stadium: grassroots investment

The partnership extends beyond elite sport. EnergyAustralia has committed to investing in community football, helping develop local energy infrastructure at grassroots clubs. This adds a social dimension to the deal, embedding sustainability not just at the top tier, but throughout the football ecosystem.

Setting the pace for sports sustainability

Marvel Stadium leadership emphasized that operating a venue active 365 days a year demands forward-thinking energy solutions. The collaboration is positioned as a blueprint for how major sports organizations can accelerate the shift toward a low-carbon future while enhancing fan experience.

Within a global sports industry increasingly defined by environmental accountability, the AFL’s move signals intent: sustainability is no longer a side initiative—it’s becoming core strategy.
