The synergy between tennis and padel has reached a new milestone. AO Ventures, the investment arm behind the Australian Open, has announced a significant expansion of its stake in Mindspring Padel, a company specializing in the financing and development of padel infrastructure. With this move, AO Ventures will now secure a seat on Mindspring’s board of directors, signaling a deeper strategic commitment to the sport’s international expansion.
Solving the Infrastructure Bottleneck Despite padel’s meteoric rise—with the sport now present in 130 countries—the primary hurdle for operators remains the high capital expenditure required to build new courts. Mindspring Padel addresses this by providing innovative financing solutions for sports clubs and leisure centers, effectively lowering the barriers to entry.
“Incorporating padel into tennis clubs is a win-win for both sports,” says Anton Brams, managing partner at Mindspring. By facilitating the development of these facilities, the partnership aims to integrate padel into the existing tennis ecosystem, leveraging the infrastructure of established venues.
A Market in Hypergrowth The investment comes at a time of record-breaking growth for padel:
- Global Footprint: Over 73,300 courts are currently installed worldwide, a 21.4% year-over-year increase.
- Australian Surge: Australia is leading the charge with 90,000 active players in 2025, marking a 50% increase from the previous year, with a consistent monthly growth rate of 15%.
For AO Ventures, this investment is more than just a financial play; it is a long-term strategy to cement the Australian Open’s influence across the global racket sports industry. As the sport continues to outpace traditional growth projections, the collaboration between tennis and padel is set to redefine the recreational sports landscape ahead of the next decade of international competition.
