AS Roma has taken a major toward building its long-awaited new home after receiving official approval from the Rome City Council for its €1 billion stadium project.
The development, expected to begin construction in 2027, represents a transformative moment for the Serie A club, which has spent more than 70 years sharing the Stadio Olimpico.
The total investment will be split between €700 million for stadium construction and €300 million for surrounding infrastructure, including green areas and urban redevelopment. Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri emphasized that the project is designed not just as a matchday venue, but as a year-round urban space integrated into the city.
Once completed, the new stadium will seat approximately 60,000 fans, slightly меньше than the Olimpico but offering a key advantage: full ownership and control, eliminating the need to share with SS Lazio. This shift is expected to significantly boost Roma’s matchday and commercial revenues.
The project also aligns with Italy’s broader infrastructure push ahead of UEFA Euro 2032, which the country will co-host with Turkey. Currently, only Allianz Stadium fully meets UEFA requirements, prompting several clubs to modernize their venues.
Clubs like AC Milan and Inter Milan are also pursuing stadium redevelopment projects, including plans around San Siro.
For Roma, the approval marks the end of years of bureaucratic delays and the beginning of a new commercial era, where stadium ownership is increasingly central to competitiveness in modern European football.
