Athletico Paranaense to Introduce Brazil’s First Retractable Grandstand

Athletico Paranaense is set to break new ground in stadium innovation by installing Brazil’s first retractable grandstand at the Arena da Baixada.

The project, developed in partnership with 30e, will be implemented between April and August and aims to transform the venue into a fully flexible, multi-purpose arena.

Already known for its retractable roof and its role as a host venue during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Arena da Baixada has positioned itself as a leading events destination in Brazil, hosting not only football matches but also UFC events and volleyball competitions.

The addition of a retractable grandstand will further enhance the stadium’s versatility. Designed with a motorized hydraulic system, the structure will allow sections of seating to open and close as needed, enabling the venue to host concerts and large-scale events without disrupting the football calendar.

A key feature of the project is the creation of a dedicated stage setup area outside the pitch, ensuring that matches can still be played while event infrastructure is assembled or dismantled. The redevelopment will involve replacing existing concrete seating in the lower Cel Dulcídio sector with modular metal bleachers.

The upgrade is expected to increase capacity for non-football events by 20% and improve safety with new evacuation routes from the pitch area.

Club operations director Fernando Volpato described the initiative as a major step forward, stating that the stadium will become “the most complete multi-event venue in Brazil.” Meanwhile, 30e executive Claudio Macedo emphasized that the partnership goes beyond event scheduling, focusing on long-term infrastructure investment and enhanced fan experience.

Importantly, the project will be delivered without placing financial strain on the club, thanks to the partnership model agreed between Athletico Paranaense and 30e.

Fans affected by the construction will be temporarily relocated through a structured process, with adjusted membership plans introduced to accommodate changes.

With this move, Athletico Paranaense is not only upgrading its stadium but also setting a new benchmark for sports and entertainment infrastructure in Brazil.
