The iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium has undergone a striking transformation, temporarily swapping football for tennis as it serves as a unique training venue during the Mutua Madrid Open.
Home to Real Madrid, the stadium replaced its traditional pitch with a clay surface, creating a practice court for players competing in the Masters 1000 event. The initiative produced a memorable scene when a light-hearted mini-match brought together stars from both sports.
Tennis icons Rafael Nadal and Jannik Sinner shared the court with footballers Thibaut Courtois and Jude Bellingham, while club president Florentino Pérez took on the role of chair umpire.
The unusual crossover quickly went viral, especially as it followed a recent La Liga fixture at the venue. Known for hosting over 80,000 fans on matchdays, the Bernabéu showcased a completely different, more recreational side.
The temporary conversion was made possible by Real Madrid’s upcoming run of away fixtures, allowing uninterrupted installation of the clay court. While no official matches will be played at the stadium, it will function as a closed training facility for tournament players.
