Birmingham City Women Sold to Shelby Companies in Major Ownership Shake-up

Birmingham City Women's team celebration during the 2026 season.

In a strategic move mirroring recent trends in top-flight English football, Birmingham City has officially announced the sale of its women’s team to its primary ownership group, Shelby Companies Limited.

The deal, confirmed on February 17, 2026, sees the holding company—controlled by Knighthead Capital Management—acquire 97% of Birmingham City Women FC. This transition effectively moves the women’s side into a separate entity from the men’s team, a financial maneuver previously utilized by clubs like Chelsea and Aston Villa to navigate profitability and sustainability regulations.

High-Profile Investors Join the Ranks

The remaining 3% of the club has been snapped up by a group of “prominent female business leaders and global icons.” Among the minority shareholders are:

  • Karen Carney: Former England international and Birmingham City legend.
  • Kim Clijsters: Former tennis World No. 1 and multi-Grand Slam champion.

Promotion Stakes and Financial Context

The sale comes at a pivotal moment for the club. Currently sitting second in the Women’s Super League 2 (WSL2), Birmingham City is fighting for automatic promotion to the top tier for the 2026-27 season. Following a recent 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace, the race is tightening, with only three points separating the top four teams, including Newcastle United and Bristol City.

By separating the women’s team’s finances, the club aims to boost independent revenue streams and ensure compliance with the strict financial rules governing English football.
