Boavista stadium set for auction amid financial crisis

Boavista FC’s historic home, Estádio do Bessa, is set to be auctioned as part of ongoing insolvency proceedings tied to the club’s mounting financial crisis.

The Porto-based side, one of Portugal’s most storied clubs and Primeira Liga champions in 2001–02, has accumulated debts exceeding €150 million. In response, the liquidation of assets was approved to mitigate losses, placing the stadium on the market via auction platform LEILOSOC.

The venue has been listed with a starting price of just over €31 million, with bidding scheduled to run from April 27 to May 20. An associated sports complex will also be auctioned, starting at €6.7 million.

Originally opened in 1910 and redeveloped ahead of UEFA Euro 2004, the 28,000-capacity stadium has been unused since May, with authorities currently prohibiting its operation. Meanwhile, Boavista has lost its professional status and now competes at regional level, playing home matches away from the stadium.

Despite the situation, the club’s ownership insists it remains committed to a recovery plan focused on financial restructuring and long-term stability, as efforts continue to secure the future of both the institution and its assets.
