Two joint ventures shortlisted for Brisbane Stadium construction

The Queensland Government’s Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority has advanced two major joint ventures to the next stage of the tender process for the construction of the new Brisbane Stadium, a key venue for the Brisbane 2032 Summer Olympics.

The two shortlisted bids are led by Built in partnership with Spain’s SACYR, and a second consortium combining John Holland with BESIX Watpac. Both groups bring extensive stadium and major infrastructure experience across Australia and international markets.

The process follows a five-month evaluation phase, with each consortium now entering an Early Contractor Involvement stage. During this phase, they will work alongside GIICA and the design team to refine buildability, sequencing, and cost efficiency before a final contractor is selected later in 2026.

The planned 63,000-seat stadium in Victoria Park is set to become the centerpiece of the Brisbane 2032 Games, hosting opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletics events. Post-Games, it will transition into a multi-use venue for cricket, AFL, and major concerts, with a concert capacity of up to 70,000.

GIICA executives say the dual-ECI model is designed to reduce risk and improve delivery outcomes, allowing the project team to compare construction approaches before committing to a final build partner.

Early design work is already underway, with architects COX, Hassell, and Azusa Sekkei leading the stadium’s conceptual development. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with early site works expected to commence after Victoria Park is handed over in mid-2026.

The project forms part of the broader A$7.1 billion Games Venues Infrastructure Program, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments.
