The ownership group behind the Denver Broncos, led by Greg Penner and Carrie Walton Penner, has acquired a 40% minority stake in the Colorado Rockies, in a move that delivers a major financial injection to the MLB club and reshapes its long-term capital structure.
The investment, through Penner Sports Group, becomes the largest minority position in the Rockies organization and is expected to eliminate the team’s outstanding debt while enabling additional investment into baseball operations and infrastructure.
Debt relief and reinvestment push
According to team officials, the deal provides immediate balance sheet relief and opens the door for both short- and long-term spending improvements. While control of the Rockies remains with the Monfort family, the transaction significantly strengthens the franchise’s financial flexibility.
Expanding Denver sports footprint
The Penner family, which purchased the Broncos in 2022 for a record $4.65 billion, has rapidly expanded its influence in Denver sports. Since acquiring the NFL franchise, the group has overseen:
- A new $175 million Broncos training facility
- Plans for a new stadium targeted for 2031
- A return to postseason competitiveness
The Rockies investment extends that footprint into MLB, deepening their presence in one of the U.S.’s most active sports markets.
