Capital One has extended its naming rights partnership with Capital One Arena for another 20 years, maintaining its association with the Washington venue that is home to the NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals.
The arena, located in Washington, D.C., is currently undergoing a major redevelopment project valued at more than $1 billion. Capital One has held the venue’s naming rights since 2017 and has now agreed to a new long-term deal with Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE), which owns the arena, the Wizards and the Capitals.
The redevelopment is scheduled for completion in 2027, ahead of the 2026-27 NBA and NHL seasons. MSE has released new renderings showing the arena’s redesigned exterior, as well as upgraded areas on the District Level and Terrace Level.
Once completed, the renovated Capital One Arena is expected to host around 250 events annually. In addition to Wizards and Capitals games, the venue will host Georgetown University basketball games, selected Washington Mystics games, concerts, family shows and other live entertainment.
The redevelopment includes redesigned District and Terrace Levels, expanded entrances, improved connections throughout the venue, new gathering spaces and an enhanced premium food and beverage programme.
MSE has also announced Theater Boxes, a new hospitality concept that will form part of The Halo, a multi-level space scheduled to open as part of the redevelopment next year.
Jim Van Stone, MSE’s president of business operations and chief commercial officer, said the partnership with Capital One would help support the next phase of Washington’s development, while the reimagined arena would reflect the city’s ambition and global profile.
Byron Daub, vice-president of sponsorships and experiential marketing at Capital One, said the company had been part of the Washington region for more than three decades and highlighted the redevelopment’s potential to support local businesses and the wider regional economy.
Construction on the arena transformation began in December 2024 following an agreement between MSE and the District of Columbia. The deal allowed MSE to redevelop Capital One Arena in Washington rather than pursue plans for a new Wizards and Capitals arena as part of a proposed entertainment district in Virginia.
The 20-year extension strengthens Capital One’s long-term position within Washington’s sports and entertainment ecosystem while giving MSE a major commercial partner alongside its more than $1 billion investment in the venue’s transformation.
