ESPN to Expand 2026 Copa Libertadores Coverage With Digital-First Strategy Targeting Gen Z Audiences

ESPN is ramping up its digital investment around the 2026 Copa Libertadores, placing YouTube, TikTok, and hybrid content formats at the center of its distribution strategy as it looks to capture younger audiences.

Disney’s sports media division plans to integrate live broadcasts, original programming, and social media-first content across its ESPN platforms, aiming to deepen engagement with Gen Z viewers and expand the tournament’s digital footprint.

Speaking on ESPN’s evolving strategy, Disney Brazil’s Digital and Social Media executive Tito Mekitarian said the goal is to meet fans where they already consume content.

“The main objective is to be where the sports fan is,” Mekitarian said. “Digital is not just about expanding distribution, but about building engagement with new audiences and complementing the subscriber experience.”

ESPN reported strong growth across its social platforms, including rapid audience expansion on TikTok, where the brand reached nearly 7 million followers in under three years, with a majority of content consumption driven by users under the age of 24.

On YouTube, ESPN has accumulated close to 8 million subscribers, leveraging programming such as Fala a Fonte and B de Bola to drive engagement and attract younger viewers.

For the 2026 Copa Libertadores, ESPN plans to introduce live pre-match and post-match programming on YouTube, focused primarily on Brazilian clubs, alongside highlights, interviews, and real-time digital cutdowns.

The strategy is built around integrating linear television coverage with digital platforms, creating a unified content ecosystem designed to extend reach and maximize engagement across multiple audience segments.

ESPN executives said the Libertadores remains one of the network’s most valuable sports properties in Latin America, with digital channels playing an increasingly central role in amplifying its reach and storytelling potential.
