It is now official. After extensive discussions between UEFA and local organizers in Qatar, the European football governing body has confirmed that the Finalissima between EURO 2024 winners Spain and Copa América 2024 champions Argentina will not take place as scheduled in Doha on 27 March. The cancellation comes amid ongoing political tensions in the region.
“It is a great disappointment for UEFA and the organizers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams the opportunity to compete for this prestigious trophy in Qatar, a country that has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to host world-class international events in state-of-the-art facilities,†the UEFA statement read. “UEFA expresses its deepest gratitude to the organizing committee and the Qatari authorities for their work in attempting to stage the match, and trusts that peace will soon return to the region.â€
The Finalissima, launched as part of UEFA and CONMEBOL’s close collaboration, brings together European and South American champions in a celebration of the highest level of international football. Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, won the inaugural edition in 2022 with a 3-0 victory over Italy at London’s Wembley Stadium.
UEFA President Aleksander ÄŒeferin expressed regret over the cancellation:
“With strong determination to save this important fixture, and despite the understandable challenges of relocating a match of this significance on such short notice, UEFA explored all possible alternatives, each of which was ultimately deemed unacceptable by the Argentine Football Association.â€
Attempts to Reschedule
UEFA outlined its efforts to keep the match alive:
- Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid, 27 March: The first option was to host the match at Real Madrid’s stadium on the original date, with a 50-50 split of fans. Argentina rejected the proposal.
- Two-legged format: UEFA then proposed a two-match solution—one in Madrid on 27 March and one in Buenos Aires during a future international window before EURO and Copa América 2028. This was also rejected.
- Neutral European venue, 27 or 30 March: UEFA sought Argentina’s commitment to play at a neutral venue in Europe on the originally scheduled date or an alternative date of 30 March. Again, the offer was declined.
Finally, Argentina proposed playing after the World Cup, but Spain had no available dates, making this option impossible. Argentina later confirmed availability only on 31 March, a date that proved unworkable. Consequently, UEFA announced with regret that this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled.
UEFA thanked Real Madrid, the Qatari organizing committee, and the Spanish Football Federation for their flexibility and support throughout the scheduling process, noting the extraordinary effort made on extremely short notice.
