A new stadium planned in Telangana, India, could surpass the 132,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium to become the largest sports stadium in the world.
The proposed venue will be developed as part of Bharat Future City, a major new urban project in the Indian state of Telangana. Construction is expected to begin in December, while the state government is currently exploring a suitable site for the approximately 100-acre stadium project.
The stadium is being planned as an international-standard, multi-purpose sports and events venue. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to cover the majority of the construction and maintenance costs, while management of the facility would be shared between the BCCI and the Telangana state government.
Cricket will be the primary sport at the venue, but the stadium is also expected to host football matches, major concerts and other large-scale events. The government is also exploring additional facilities that could enable the complex to accommodate major conventions and international events.
The stadium will form part of Bharat Future City, which is planned to cover around 30,000 acres and focus on artificial intelligence, life sciences, tourism and sports. Approximately half of the city is expected to be reserved for green space.
The wider development is being designed as a net-zero, integrated urban centre built around the concept of combining work, living, learning and recreation within a single ecosystem.
Proposed districts include an AI City, Health City, Life Sciences zone, an electric vehicle and energy storage park, an entertainment district, a sports hub, central business districts and residential areas.
If the final capacity exceeds 132,000, the new venue would overtake Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium as the world’s largest stadium, further strengthening India’s position as a global hub for cricket, major sporting events and large-scale entertainment.
