Kentucky Athletics Expands Fanatics Deal with NIL Creator Program

University of Kentucky Athletics has extended its partnership with Fanatics for an additional 12 years, expanding the agreement to include a first-of-its-kind Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) program for student-athletes.

The partnership builds on Fanatics’ existing role as operator of the UK Team Shop and now integrates NIL opportunities through the company’s Creator Program. Selected student-athletes will be able to launch personal storefronts, curate product collections, and promote merchandise via their social media channels, earning compensation through NIL deals.

In addition, some athletes will feature in marketing campaigns across Fanatics’ retail ecosystem, including both online platforms and physical retail partners such as bookstores and major retailers. The collaboration also extends into collectibles through Fanatics Collectibles, which will produce trading cards via its Topps and BowmanU brands featuring current athletes and alumni.

The initiative is managed through BBNIL, developed in partnership with JMI Sports, ensuring all NIL content is coordinated and compliant while enabling athletes to promote officially licensed merchandise.

Key Implications

  • For athletes: Direct NIL earning opportunities through storefronts, endorsements, and content creation
  • For fans: Increased visibility of athletes promoting officially licensed Kentucky merchandise
  • For recruiting: Added competitive advantage for coaches leveraging NIL opportunities in recruitment pitches
  • For the market: A scalable model blending multimedia rights, merchandising, and NIL monetization

According to UK Athletics officials, the deal represents a significant investment in NIL infrastructure and strengthens the program’s ability to operate beyond traditional revenue-sharing limits.

While similar NIL-integrated partnerships are expected to emerge across college sports, Kentucky is positioned as an early adopter of this integrated Fanatics Creator-driven model.
