Manchester United to Provide Free Coach Travel for Bournemouth Away Fans

In a significant gesture of fan support, Manchester United has announced it will provide free return coach travel for supporters attending the Premier League away fixture against Bournemouth on Friday, April 20, 2026.

The decision follows the rescheduling of the match to an 8:00 PM GMT kick-off on a Friday night—a slot that presents a logistical nightmare for travelling fans making the 500-mile round trip.

Tackling “Inconvenient” Scheduling

The move is a direct response to growing frustrations over fixture changes driven by broadcast demands. United fans have faced a particularly grueling schedule this season, with the club noting that between February and April, they will play on a weekend in only two out of eight weeks.

  • Logistical Barriers: There are no public transport options available to return fans to Manchester after the match ends (around 10:00 PM).
  • Cost Savings: A standard return coach journey from Manchester to the south coast typically costs around £50.
  • Accessibility: The free travel initiative specifically ensures that disabled supporters and wheelchair users, who frequently rely on club-organized coaches, are not priced out of the trip.

Collaborative Fan Engagement

The initiative was spearheaded by United’s Director of Fan Engagement, Rick McGagh, in collaboration with the club’s Fan Advisory Board and Fans’ Forum.

United CEO Omar Berrada has previously raised these scheduling concerns with Premier League CEO Richard Masters, emphasizing the “cultural importance” of match-going fans. The club has argued that televised slots should be announced earlier to allow for better travel planning, especially during high-commitment periods like the festive season.

Vitality Stadium Context

Despite the logistical hurdles, United is expected to easily sell out its limited away allocation:

  • Away Allocation: 1,299 tickets.
  • Stadium Capacity: 11,307 (The smallest in the Premier League).
  • Booking Details: Successful ticket holders will receive an email from the club with instructions on how to secure their seat on the free coaches.
