The 2026 edition of the NCAA March Madness has opened with another strong viewership milestone, continuing the tournament’s upward momentum across broadcast and streaming platforms.
Thursday’s opening round averaged 9.8 million viewers per window across CBS, TNT, TBS, and truTV—up 6% year-over-year and marking a new record for the opening day of the tournament.
The primetime window, featuring matchups like Michigan–Howard and VCU–North Carolina, led the day with a combined 12.5 million viewers, setting a first-round record for that time slot. Individual games also posted strong numbers, with Duke’s comeback win drawing 5.43 million viewers, the highest single-game audience of the day.
The strong performance continues a broader trend. Through the opening round, the tournament is averaging 9.3 million viewers, also a record, reflecting both organic growth and changes in Nielsen’s measurement methodology—combining traditional panel data with “Big Data†from smart TVs and set-top boxes.
Even accounting for measurement adjustments, the numbers point to sustained momentum. The 2025 tournament had already set a then-record with 9.1 million viewers on opening day, while the 2024 edition averaged 8.5 million.
Viewership growth has been consistent across the sport, with the college basketball regular season up 19% year-over-year, including a 12% increase on CBS alone. High-profile programs like Duke Blue Devils and Michigan Wolverines continue to drive a significant share of the audience, appearing in eight of the ten most-watched games during the season.
The opening round also benefited from marquee matchups, competitive games, and the tournament’s unique format—factors that continue to make March Madness one of the most valuable properties in sports media.
