Grup Mediapro has further solidified its dominance in the South American sports market by securing a strategic package of media rights for Uruguayan football. Covering the 2026–2029 cycle, the agreement marks a pivotal shift in how the nation’s football content is distributed and consumed.
Breaking the Monopoly
Mediapro was awarded Lot 5 following a comprehensive tender process by the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF). This specific package grants Mediapro the rights to exploit content across:
- Interactive entertainment platforms
- Digital operators
- Emerging audiovisual ecosystems
This deal is part of a broader restructuring of Uruguayan football rights, which were historically concentrated under a single dominant holder. The new fragmented model aims to increase competition, drive higher commercial valuations, and modernize the digital reach of the league.
Expanding South American Footprint
The move strengthens Mediapro’s already massive influence in Latin American sports. The company currently manages:
- International Qualifiers: Commercial rights for the home matches of six national teams (Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Paraguay, and Venezuela) for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
- CONCACAF Portfolio: Since 2020, Mediapro has handled international commercialization for the Gold Cup and Champions Cup.
By taking control of digital and interactive rights in Uruguay, Mediapro is positioning itself at the forefront of the region’s transition toward streaming and fan-engagement-led broadcasting.
