AC Milan have released a new short documentary centered on club captain Mike Maignan, offering a rare look into the life and leadership of one of Europe’s most influential goalkeepers.
Titled “Beyond the Magic,†the film has been available since March 13 on the club’s official channels and the sports streaming platform DAZN.
The documentary explores Maignan’s journey both on and off the pitch, portraying him not only as Milan’s first-choice goalkeeper but as one of the emotional and tactical leaders within the dressing room. Known for his commanding presence and strong personality, the French international embodies the competitive spirit and responsibility historically associated with Milan’s legendary captains.
A defining leadership moment
One of the most striking scenes takes place moments before Milan’s derby victory over city rivals Inter Milan. Just before kickoff, Maignan gathers his teammates into a tight huddle and delivers a short but powerful message:
“Together, guys, together. Keep your emotions in check, stay tight, stay calm. Stay focused on the game.â€
The moment encapsulates the unity within the squad and highlights Maignan’s role as a leader capable of guiding the team during high-pressure situations.
From childhood struggles to the elite
“Beyond the Magic†also traces the goalkeeper’s personal story, from the challenges of his early life to his rise among Europe’s elite players. The film presents Maignan as a figure defined not only by talent but by discipline, mindset and a deep sense of responsibility.
Speaking about wearing the captain’s armband, Maignan explains:
“Being captain is a responsibility, and I’m proud of it. In a group of twenty or thirty players, there is only one captain. You don’t play a role—you have to be yourself and set an example every day.â€
Inside life at Milanello
The documentary includes exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from training sessions and daily life at Milan’s training center, revealing the atmosphere within the squad and the relationships between players, staff and coaches.
It also features the work done with goalkeeping coach Claudio Filippi, as well as Maignan’s thoughts on head coach Massimiliano Allegri.
