As the world prepares for the opening of the XXV Olympic Winter Games on February 6, new economic data reveals the staggering scale of the tournament’s impact on Italy. According to the latest estimates, the Milano Cortina 2026 Games are projected to generate €5.3 billion in total economic value for the host regions of Lombardy, Veneto, and Trentino-Alto Adige.
The Multiplier Effect: Jobs and Investment
Research conducted by Luiss University, titled “Sport and Business: A Winning Partnership,” highlights that the sporting sector alone will see a demand increase of approximately €1 billion. When accounting for direct, indirect, and induced effects, the national economic contribution reaches nearly €2.9 billion.
The scale of employment is equally impressive:
- 13,000 new jobs created by the organization of the Games.
- 9,000 positions specifically within the sports sector.
- 4,000 roles in linked industries such as tourism and logistics.
Infrastructure and Sustainability Legacy
A total of €3 billion has been funneled into infrastructure, modernizing the country with projects designed for long-term use. Key developments include the upgrading of railway lines between Milan and Cortina, new road links, and urban regeneration projects.
True to the Organising Committee’s “Sustainability and Legacy” plan, these Games aim to be the most sustainable in history. 90% of competitions will take place in existing or temporary facilities, drastically reducing environmental impact. Notably, the Olympic Village in Milan is slated to be converted into housing for students and young workers immediately following the Games.
Tourism and the “Olympic Weekend”
With 2,900 athletes from over 90 countries participating in 116 events, international tourism is expected to be a major revenue driver. However, the cost of attendance varies significantly by location. According to Altroconsumo, a weekend for two (including lodging, transport, and tickets) averages €1,800. Milan remains the most accessible hub at roughly €300, while the luxury appeal of Cortina d’Ampezzo sees prices climb above €2,000.
