Major League Baseball (MLB) has strengthened its push into the Indian market by appointing Indian cricket star Suryakumar Yadav as a league ambassador, aiming to grow baseball’s presence in one of the world’s largest sports markets.

Under the partnership, Yadav will make his debut as an MLB ambassador during this week’s All-Star festivities in Philadelphia. He will participate in fan engagement activities, appear in original digital content and represent the league at various MLB events designed to connect cricket and baseball audiences.

MLB has also renewed its media rights agreement with Indian broadcaster JioStar, ensuring that selected regular-season games, the MLB All-Star Game, the postseason and the World Series will continue to be broadcast across India.

Long-term investment in India

The initiative is part of MLB’s broader strategy to build a sustainable fan base in India. The league previously attempted to develop talent through the Million Dollar Arm project, which inspired the 2014 Hollywood film and led to the signing of Indian players Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, although neither reached the major leagues.

India’s presence in professional baseball has grown in recent years. Kumar Rocker became the first player of Indian descent to reach MLB in 2024, while Toronto Blue Jays prospect Arjun Nimmala is considered one of the sport’s most promising young talents.

MLB opened an office in New Delhi in 2019 and recently signed a strategic partnership with Rise Worldwide, the agency representing Suryakumar Yadav, to further support the development of baseball in India.

Widely known as SKY, Yadav brings significant reach to the partnership with more than 20 million Instagram followers and 4.4 million followers on X.

Rather than focusing solely on talent identification, MLB’s latest approach centers on fan development through media partnerships, local engagement and high-profile ambassadors, reflecting the league’s long-term ambition to establish baseball in the world’s most populous country.
