Movistar Plus+ and DAZN dominate Spain’s pay-TV sports audience

Movistar Plus+ and DAZN have cemented their dominance in Spain’s pay-TV sports market, jointly accounting for 87.5% of total audience share in 2025.

Out of 77.2 million unique viewers recorded across sports pay-TV, Movistar Plus+ led with 44.8 million, while DAZN followed with 22.8 million, according to data from Barlovento Comunicación based on figures from Kantar.

Together, the two platforms control seven of the eight प्रमुख pay-TV sports channels in Spain, largely driven by their ownership of premium broadcasting rights. Football remains the ключ driver of viewership, far outperforming all other sports.

خصص football-specific channels—such as LaLiga and Champions League broadcasts on Movistar Plus+ and DAZN—consistently attract over 10–12 million annual viewers. The sport also dominates investment, accounting for approximately €1.6 billion of the €1.8 billion spent annually on sports rights in Spain.

Meanwhile, other sports content has seen declining audiences, partly due to a gradual shift toward free-to-air broadcasting. Channels such as DAZN F1 and general sports networks have experienced notable drops in viewership over recent seasons.

The market has also undergone structural changes. Telefónica lost exclusive rights to Spain’s top basketball league, with some games moving to regional broadcasters. Similarly, MotoGP rights have been partially sublicensed, reflecting a broader redistribution of content.

A key outlier in the market is Eurosport, which remains outside the Movistar-DAZN duopoly but still benefits from distribution agreements with both platforms. Its audience peaked in 2024 due to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games before declining again in 2025.

Overall, Spain’s sports pay-TV ecosystem is becoming increasingly concentrated and specialized, with football at its core and a handful of dominant platforms shaping the market.
