A landmark study by BDO, commissioned by Fáilte Ireland, has revealed that the first-ever NFL regular season game in Ireland generated a staggering €104.5 million in total economic impact. The fixture, which saw the Pittsburgh Steelers face off against the Minnesota Vikings at Croke Park on September 28, 2025, has been hailed as a triumph for sports tourism and government investment.
A Ten-Fold Return on Investment
The Irish Government’s strategic investment of €9.95 million to secure the game paid off significantly, yielding a return more than ten times the initial funding.
- Direct Expenditure: €76.8 million was spent directly on accommodation, retail, transport, and food.
- Indirect Impact: A further €27.7 million was generated through wider economic multiplier effects.
- Tax Revenue: For every €1 of public money spent, the State received €2.24 back in tax receipts.
Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, described the results as “money well-spent,” noting that the event solidified Ireland’s reputation as a premier destination for global sporting spectacles.
Global Reach and Tourism Boost
The game drew a sell-out crowd of 74,512, with a remarkably international audience profile:
- 37% of fans traveled from the United States.
- 30% arrived from other international markets.
- 33% were domestic attendees from Ireland.
Beyond the stadium, the game reached 9.2 million unique viewers on US television, providing invaluable promotional exposure for Irish tourism. Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke, highlighted that the “tourism dividend” extended far beyond Dublin, as the 51,500 international visitors traveled across the country, supporting regional businesses.
Building a Long-Term Legacy: Flag Football
The NFL and the Irish Government have also confirmed a joint funding initiative to capitalize on the sport’s growing popularity.
- Olympic Path: With flag football set to debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, the government and the NFL will each invest €200,000 annually over the next three years to grow the sport.
- School Integration: The NFL has already delivered starter kits to 900 schools, with 4,500 children currently participating. The goal is to reach 50,000 young participants by 2027.
With discussions already underway for a potential NFL return to Dublin, the 2025 game has set a high bar for the economic and cultural value of American football in Europe.
