Opel is set to enter Formula E from next season, aligning its debut with the introduction of the championship’s next-generation Gen4 cars.
The German manufacturer confirmed the move during the Madrid e-Prix, marking a significant step in its transition toward electrification and a return to top-level motorsport under the Opel GSE (Grand Sport Electric) Formula E Team banner.
“Joining Formula E marks an important milestone in our journey toward an electric future,†said Opel CEO Florian Huettl.
Entering at a pivotal technological moment
Opel’s arrival coincides with one of the most significant technical shifts in the series’ history.
The new Gen4 cars are expected to deliver up to 600 kW of power (over 800 horsepower) in attack mode, with a standard output of 450 kW—representing a major leap in performance and efficiency for electric single-seaters.
“With Formula E moving to Gen4, we see this as the ideal moment to join such an exciting, fully electric competition,†Huettl added.
A strategic boost for Formula E
For Formula E, Opel’s entry reinforces the championship’s growing appeal among global manufacturers as the automotive industry accelerates toward electrification.
CEO Jeff Dodds welcomed the addition, highlighting Opel’s engineering heritage and brand identity as key assets that will bring “new dynamics†to the grid.
The announcement also reflects a broader trend: manufacturers increasingly view Formula E not just as a racing platform, but as a testing ground and global showcase for electric mobility technologies.
Citroën Racing also returns
Alongside Opel, Citroën has also confirmed its return to motorsport through Formula E via its Citroën Racing division.
The French brand described the move as a reconnection with its racing heritage, positioning Formula E as a “technological showcase†aligned with sustainability, urban racing, and a younger, digitally engaged audience.
Madrid milestone
The announcement took place at the Madrid e-Prix, held at the Circuito del Jarama—the first Formula E race ever staged in Spain—further underlining the championship’s expanding geographic footprint.
As Formula E prepares for its Gen4 era, the arrival of major automotive players signals a new phase of competition—where performance, innovation, and electrification converge on a global stage.
