Poland has been officially selected to host the 2028 European Athletics Championships, marking the first time in the event’s 92-year history that the country will stage the prestigious competition.
The biennial championships will take place from June 3 to 8, 2028, in the city of Silesia, with events held at the Silesian Stadium. The competition is scheduled just one month ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, offering athletes a key opportunity to fine-tune their preparations on a major international stage.
While this will be Poland’s debut as host of the senior European Athletics Championships, the nation has built a strong reputation for organizing top-tier athletics events in recent years. Silesia has previously hosted the 2017 European Athletics U23 Championships, the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships, and multiple editions of the European Athletics Team Championships in 2019, 2021, and 2023.
European Athletics CEO Christian Milz highlighted Silesia’s proven track record, stating that the region has become one of Europe’s leading destinations for major athletics competitions. He expressed confidence that the 2028 edition will meet the highest organizational standards.
Looking ahead, the 2026 European Athletics Championships will be held in Birmingham, United Kingdom, from August 10 to 16, while the most recent edition took place in Rome in 2024.
Poland ranks as the sixth most successful nation in the history of the European Athletics Championships, having secured 59 gold medals and a total of 185 medals. At the 2024 edition, Polish athletes earned six medals, including two golds, underlining the country’s continued strength in the sport.
