Populous unveils redesign for iconic Eden Gardens expansion

Architecture firm Populous has released new design plans for the redevelopment of Eden Gardens, aiming to transform the historic Kolkata cricket stadium into a modern, multi-purpose venue with expanded capacity and premium fan experiences.

The project will increase the stadium’s capacity from 68,000 to 85,000, alongside a significant upgrade in hospitality, seating, and commercial facilities.

Central to the redesign is a new sky deck overlooking the surrounding park and Hooghly River, positioned as a year-round social space for both matchdays and non-matchday events. The plans also include upgraded premium seating, expanded corporate lounges, and a wider range of seating categories for fans.

In total, the redevelopment introduces over 41,000 square feet of hospitality areas, 44,000 square feet of non-matchday facilities, and a 30% increase in corporate hospitality seating.

Populous also plans to integrate fan-focused attractions including a museum, hall of fame, and digital engagement zones designed to celebrate Eden Gardens’ heritage, alongside a new members’ club linking the stadium more closely with its surrounding gardens.

The firm said the challenge was modernising the venue while preserving its historic identity and working within the constraints of its urban location.

Cricket Association of Bengal president Sourav Ganguly said the redevelopment aims to elevate Eden Gardens into “one of the finest cricketing venues in the world,” balancing legacy with a next-generation fan experience.
