Populous to Lead Redevelopment of Stadio Renzo Barbera

Stadio Renzo Barbera

Populous has been appointed to lead the redesign of Stadio Renzo Barbera, home of Palermo FC, as the Serie B side moves forward with plans to modernize its historic venue.

The appointment follows the completion of a key preliminary services conference, confirming the technical and administrative feasibility of the redevelopment project. This milestone paves the way for the next phase of approvals, bringing the stadium closer to a full-scale transformation.

A Key Step Toward Modernization

Populous will work in collaboration with its Italian team and EMEA headquarters to deliver the design, building on feasibility studies already completed for the project. The redevelopment aims to modernize the stadium while preserving its identity as one of Palermo’s most important sporting landmarks.

The current capacity of the Barbera is around 36,000, with the stadium originally opening in 1932 and later hosting matches during the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy.

Euro 2032 in Focus

The project is closely tied to broader ambitions around hosting major international tournaments, including UEFA Euro 2032. Italy and Türkiye are set to co-host the tournament, with five stadiums from each country to be selected by the end of 2026.

Palermo FC and the Municipality of Palermo are working together to position the stadium as a potential candidate, aiming to align infrastructure upgrades with international standards.

A Landmark for the City

According to club and design officials, the redeveloped stadium is envisioned as both a national and international landmark—one that functions not only on matchdays but as a year-round venue for the community.

Populous senior principal Silvia Prandelli described the project as a sustainable development model that will become an “icon” for the city, reflecting both sporting ambition and urban regeneration.

A Long-Term Vision

The redevelopment is part of a broader effort between Palermo FC, local authorities, and stakeholders to create a modern, future-ready stadium that supports the club’s ambitions and enhances the fan experience.

First-look design visuals for the new Stadio Renzo Barbera are expected to be released later this year, offering the first glimpse into how the historic venue could be transformed.
