Real Betis has officially started the first construction phase of the long-awaited redevelopment of the Estadio Benito VillamarÃn, marking the beginning of a major transformation project in Seville.
The initial phase, carried out in partnership with construction firm Acciona, includes excavation work and the installation of diaphragm walls to allow for future underground levels to be built.
At the same time, the club and contractor are working on an optimisation plan aimed at reducing both construction time and overall project costs.
The redevelopment will be completed in multiple stages. The next phase includes the construction of a new Preferencia stand, along with upgrades to the Gol Norte, Fondo, and Gol Sur stands. Plans also include a new commercial building, underground parking facilities, and a fully covered roof structure with a modern vertical façade.
Once completed, the stadium is expected to retain its current capacity of around 60,700 but will feature significant upgrades in infrastructure, hospitality areas, and fan experience zones. VIP capacity will also increase from roughly 1,200 to around 3,700 seats.
The project, designed by Gensler and Rafael de la-Hoz, is currently scheduled for completion in May 2028. During the construction period, Real Betis will temporarily play home matches at Estadio de La Cartuja.
The total cost of the redevelopment is estimated at €262.3 million, with demolition works on existing structures having already begun last summer and the main construction contract awarded earlier this year.
Club officials say the redesigned stadium will transform Benito VillamarÃn into a year-round commercial and entertainment venue, featuring modern technology, improved access routes, steeper stands, and expanded hospitality spaces.
The project is also expected to reduce disruption to the surrounding Heliopolis neighbourhood through careful planning of traffic, noise, and construction logistics.
