RTL completes €68m takeover of Sky Deutschland in major European media consolidation

Sky Seeks First-Ever Sponsor for Soccer Saturday After 30 Years

A significant shift in the European media landscape has been confirmed as RTL Group has completed its acquisition of German pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland from US media giant Comcast.

The deal was finalized with RTL paying an upfront cash consideration of €68 million ($79.2 million). While the transaction was initially valued at around €150 million, the final figure was reduced following adjustments linked to net working capital and debt-like items.

Major impact on sports broadcasting rights

The acquisition brings Sky Deutschland’s extensive premium sports portfolio under RTL’s control. This includes some of Europe’s most valuable live sports rights:

  • German Bundesliga
  • English Premier League
  • Formula 1

These assets will now be integrated with RTL’s existing entertainment and news operations, significantly strengthening its position in the competitive European broadcasting market.

DACH region media expansion

With the deal, RTL now fully controls Sky’s operations across the DACH region — Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, and South Tyrol. RTL also confirmed that the Sky brand will continue to be used.

RTL’s largest deal to date

This marks the biggest transaction in the history of RTL Group since its formation in 2000. The company says the move aligns with its strategy to build stronger local European media players capable of competing with global streaming platforms.

Additional payment clause

Under the agreement, Sky may receive an additional payment within five years if RTL Group’s share price exceeds €36.26.

Overall, the deal represents one of the most important consolidation moves in European sports broadcasting in recent years.
