In a strategic move to stabilize its financial future, FC Schalke 04 has officially sold a minority stake in the company that owns its stadium, the VELTINS-Arena, to its own fans. The announcement, made on February 20, 2026, marks a significant step in the club’s “Schalke is a Cooperative” initiative.
The fan cooperative, known as Auf Schalke eG, has acquired a 5.4% stake in the stadium operating company for a total transaction value of €7.5 million.
Debt Reduction and Financial Restructuring
The proceeds from this sale are earmarked for specific financial maneuvers designed to clean up the club’s balance sheet:
- Debt Repayment: A primary portion of the €7.5 million will be used to reduce the club’s existing long-term debt.
- Repurchasing Shares: The funds will also allow the club to buy back shares currently held by Stadtwerke Gelsenkirchen GmbH (the municipal utility company), effectively consolidating more control over the stadium entity.
- Fan Ownership Model: This transaction reinforces the traditional German “50+1” spirit, allowing supporters to have a tangible financial interest and a voice in the infrastructure of their club.
VELTINS-Arena: A Key Asset
Despite Schalke’s recent sporting struggles in the lower divisions, the VELTINS-Arena remains one of Europe’s premier multi-purpose venues:
- Capacity: 62,271 for football matches.
- Technology: Famous for its retractable pitch and slide-out grass surface, making it a high-revenue venue for concerts and non-sporting events.
- Value: The stadium serves as the club’s most valuable physical asset, and selling small percentages to fans allows for capital injection without losing majority control to outside private equity.
