Lega Serie A has successfully utilized the 2024/25 Coppa Italia Frecciarossa Final as a large-scale pilot project to establish a new gold standard for sustainable event operations.
Under its “Road to Zero” framework, the league used the final as a controlled environment to map the total environmental footprint of a major football event. The project focused on data collection and process optimization across logistics, stadium operations, and procurement.
Key Operational Metrics:
- Carbon Footprint: The event generated 175.8 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, serving as a baseline for future year-on-year benchmarking.
- Energy & Resources: The Stadio Olimpico was powered entirely by renewable energy (20,000 kWh), while water usage was tracked at 310,000 liters.
- Mobility Challenge: Travel for teams, staff, and partners remains the largest driver of impact. Serie A addressed this by prioritizing rail travel and centralized logistics to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
- Circular Economy: Waste management and sustainable procurement were integrated into the event to improve supplier discipline and reduce waste-related expenses.
Strategic Implementation
Rather than a one-off marketing campaign, Serie A is treating this data as a performance tool. By standardizing sustainability requirements in procurement and staff training, the league has created a scalable model that can be applied to all future competitions and major finals.
