Stanley Cup Playoffs viewership jumps 82%

TV audiences for the Stanley Cup Playoffs are surging, with the first nine days averaging 1.1 million viewers across ESPN and TNT Sports — an 82% increase year-over-year and the highest figure on record for this stage of the postseason.

The sharp rise is being driven by strong performances across both networks. ESPN platforms are averaging 1.2 million viewers (+101%), while TNT Sports is delivering 1.1 million (+67%) compared to last year.

The most-watched game of the second weekend was Game 4 between the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild, drawing 1.92 million viewers across TBS and truTV — the biggest non-Game 7 audience in TNT Sports’ opening round history.

Elsewhere, matchups like Pittsburgh Penguins vs Philadelphia Flyers have consistently delivered strong numbers, with multiple games surpassing 1.6 million viewers, while Sunday’s Tampa Bay Lightning vs Montreal Canadiens Game 4 averaged 1.9 million on ESPN.

Notably, the surge isn’t solely tied to traditional big-market teams. Series involving Canadian franchises and Sun Belt markets — often considered weaker draws — have also posted solid audiences, pointing to broader engagement across the playoff field.

It’s also worth noting that the NHL still allows regional broadcasts during the first round, meaning total viewership is likely even higher when local audiences are included.

Early returns suggest the league’s postseason is not just holding momentum — it’s redefining it.
