The emerging racket sport Typti will stage its first U.S. Open next month in California, marking a major step in the sport’s bid to establish itself alongside tennis and pickleball.
The event, scheduled for May 20–24 at the Calabasas Pickleball Club, will feature a $100,000 prize purse and is expected to draw a mix of former professional athletes and early adopters of the sport.
Typti, which blends elements of tennis and badminton and is played on a pickleball-sized court, uses foam-based balls and compact tennis-style rackets designed to reduce noise and increase accessibility at local clubs.
NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, currently ranked eighth in Typti competition, is expected to compete, alongside former WTA player Ashley Harkleroad.
Steve Bellamy, founder of Tennis Channel and CEO of Typti Inc., said the sport is designed to offer a lower-cost, lower-barrier alternative to traditional professional tennis.
“We see Typti coexisting with pickleball, not competing with it,†Bellamy said. “The goal is to give tennis-style players a format that is more accessible, more local, and more scalable.â€
The company says early equipment sales have exceeded projections by 1,400%, with rackets already becoming a top seller through specialty tennis retailers.
Bellamy added that the U.S. Open will also serve as the launch event for Typti’s official world rankings system, with plans to expand into dozens of tournaments across North America over the next two years.
Future events are already being discussed in major cities including Dallas, Toronto, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Miami, signaling an aggressive expansion strategy for the sport’s early commercial phase.
