The U.S. Soccer federation and Nike have officially unveiled the kits that the United States men’s national soccer team will wear at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, introducing a bold home design inspired by the American flag and a darker, more subtle away look featuring metallic stars.
The home jersey features wavy red-and-white horizontal stripes meant to evoke the motion of the American flag. Designers said the goal was to create something unmistakably American — a kit that would immediately stand out in stadiums during the World Cup.
The away kit, meanwhile, takes a different approach. Rendered in a dark “obsidian†tone, the jersey features metallic silver stars that are barely visible from afar but become more prominent up close or when light reflects off the surface. According to U.S. Soccer executives, the reflective elements were designed to create the effect of “two different kits†depending on the viewing angle.
Players had a bigger role in the design
The design process followed extensive feedback from players, many of whom were unhappy with the team’s kits at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Several members of the squad — including midfielder Tyler Adams — pushed for greater involvement in the creative process after criticizing the previous tournament’s minimalist white home jersey and tie-dye blue away design.
This time around, roughly a dozen players were consulted early in the process. Some were even invited to test fabrics and give feedback on colors, textures and patterns before the final concepts were developed.
Players later reviewed proposed designs and requested revisions, including a redesign of the away kit before the final version was approved.
Adams described the finished dark kit as one that could become an “all-time classic,†praising the reflective stars and the navy-leaning color scheme.
A balance between identity and lifestyle
Designers said the home jersey was meant to be bold and unmistakable, while the away kit was created with a lifestyle feel — something players could wear off the field as well.
According to Nike product executives, players specifically asked for a design that could work beyond the pitch.
One player reportedly described the final look as something “you could wear to a bar with your friends on a Friday night with jeans.â€
The dark obsidian color also emerged as a compromise. Some players had pushed for a fully black “intimidation†kit, while others preferred a more traditional navy tone.
Building a recognizable American identity
Beyond the immediate tournament, both U.S. Soccer and Nike said the broader goal was to establish a more consistent visual identity for the national team.
Historically, U.S. kits have changed dramatically from cycle to cycle. Federation officials believe the program now has an opportunity to build a recognizable look — similar to the iconic colors associated with teams like Brazil national football team and Netherlands national football team.
Adams said future kits could consistently incorporate core American elements such as stars or stripes to reinforce that identity.
Debut before the World Cup
The United States men’s national soccer team is expected to debut the new kits in March friendlies against Belgium national football team and Portugal national football team.
Those matches will be the final games before head coach Mauricio Pochettino names his 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
For a national team preparing to host the world’s biggest football tournament on home soil, the new look represents more than just a kit launch — it’s an attempt to define what an American football identity should look like on the global stage.
