WBD Extends FIE Rights to Boost Fencing’s Global Reach Ahead of LA28

Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has strengthened its commitment to Olympic sports by extending its long-term media rights partnership with the International Fencing Federation (FIE), aiming to elevate fencing’s global profile ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Under the renewed agreement, Warner Bros. Discovery will continue broadcasting major international fencing events across 75 markets in Europe and Asia. Coverage will be distributed through Eurosport and TNT Sports, with streaming available on HBO Max across Europe.

Expanded Coverage Across Key Competitions

The deal includes live broadcasts of flagship events such as the FIE World Championships and the FIE European Championships, alongside highlights from the Grands Prix circuits in epee, foil, and sabre disciplines. This comprehensive coverage strategy is designed to sustain momentum built during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where fencing drew strong viewership across key European markets.

Digital Push to Attract New Audiences

Beyond traditional broadcasting, WBD will collaborate closely with the FIE to amplify fencing’s digital presence. This includes producing editorial features, social media clips, and branded content aimed at engaging younger audiences and expanding the sport’s global footprint in the lead-up to LA28.

FIE interim president Abdelmoniem Elhusseiny подчеркed that the partnership reflects a shared ambition to inspire a new generation of athletes and fans, building on the sport’s recent Olympic success.

Strategic Context: Media Consolidation in Play

The agreement comes at a pivotal moment for WBD, as the company remains at the center of ongoing consolidation talks within the global media landscape. Recent developments saw Netflix withdraw from acquisition discussions, potentially leaving Paramount in a position to pursue a transformative deal.

Such a merger could significantly reshape the sports broadcasting ecosystem, combining WBD’s international rights portfolio with Paramount’s strong US assets, including coverage of the UEFA Champions League and the NFL.

A Long-Term Bet on Olympic Sports

With rights secured for multiple Olympic cycles through 2032, WBD is positioning itself as a central player in global sports media. The extended FIE deal underscores a broader strategy: leveraging multi-platform distribution and storytelling to bring niche Olympic sports like fencing into the mainstream.
