Wembley Stadium, the iconic home of English football, has completed the installation of 10,000 new licensed standing seats. This significant upgrade, located in the east and west sections of Level 5, marks the latest move by the Football Association (FA) to address fan demand for safer standing environments during major matches.
Enhancing Safety and Atmosphere
The new rail seating is designed to prioritize spectator safety while maintaining the vibrant atmosphere that characterizes high-stakes football finals. Each seat features an independent waist-high rail, providing essential support and stability for fans. This infrastructure helps mitigate risks such as progressive crowd collapse and injuries during goal celebrations, while also making matchday movement more orderly.
“We have listened to supporters’ calls for more options about how they choose to watch a football match,” said Mark Lynch, Wembley Stadium Director. “We are delighted to bring licensed standing areas into a secure environment that places supporter safety at its heart.”
A Strategic Roll-out
The move follows successful trials of standing areas on Level 1, which were first introduced at the 2023 Carabao Cup final. The expansion was officially approved by the Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) in March 2025.
Key details of the implementation include:
- Capacity: 10,000 additional spaces in the upper tier (Level 5).
- Infrastructure: Independent waist-high rails for every row to prevent falling and overcrowding.
- Regulation: All standing areas are strictly licensed, ensuring that every spectator has a designated, ticketed space.
Looking Ahead
Fans will be able to experience the new sections starting with the Carabao Cup final between Arsenal and Manchester City on March 22, 2026. Following this, the sections will be in use for England’s upcoming international friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, as well as the Vertu Trophy final in April.
The introduction of these areas aligns with a broader trend across English football, where clubs are increasingly adopting safe-standing technology to provide supporters with the choice to stand securely, effectively putting an end to the risks associated with persistent standing in traditional seated areas.
