Paraag Marathe, one of the San Francisco 49ers’ longest-serving executives and owner Jed York’s trusted lieutenant for nearly 25 years, is stepping away from his role with the NFL franchise to focus on Leeds United and Rangers FC.
In an internal email shared by the 49ers, York thanked Marathe for his long-standing commitment to the organization, highlighting his influence on the club’s football operations, the development of Levi’s Stadium and the franchise’s growing reputation in global sports.
Widely regarded as one of the NFL’s leading contract negotiators and salary-cap experts, Marathe played a central role in shaping the 49ers’ roster and long-term football strategy.
Following his departure, assistant general manager Brian Hampton will become the team’s lead contract negotiator. According to team sources, Hampton has already handled much of the club’s contract work in recent years.
Former Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who joined the 49ers earlier this year as vice president of personnel and strategy, will also assume several of Marathe’s former responsibilities. Adofo-Mensah previously worked under Marathe between 2013 and 2019.
Greater focus on European football
Marathe’s decision reflects his growing responsibilities in European football. He currently serves as chairman of Leeds United and is also involved in the ownership and leadership of Rangers FC.
By stepping away from his long-time role with the 49ers, Marathe is expected to devote his full attention to the strategic development of both clubs, underscoring the increasing crossover between North American sports executives and European football ownership.
