Serie A reaches €300m settlement with IMG after long legal dispute

The board of the Serie A has approved a majority vote to finalize a €300 million settlement with sports media company IMG, bringing an end to a legal dispute that has lasted since 2019.

The agreement follows years of litigation over alleged anti-competitive practices linked to the sale of international media rights between 2008 and 2018. A prior tribunal assessment had valued potential damages at over €500 million, with earlier claims reaching as high as €3 billion.

Under the terms of the settlement, IMG will pay the agreed €300 million by June 2026. The case originated after antitrust findings suggested the existence of a restrictive arrangement that impacted the value of Serie A’s overseas broadcasting rights during the relevant period.

The dispute involved both current and former Serie A clubs, complicating the process of determining how compensation will be distributed across teams that participated in the league during those years.

The resolution of the case marks the closure of one of the most significant legal battles in European football governance in recent years, with implications for how international media rights are valued and negotiated going forward.
