Real Oviedo has strengthened its international presence with the inauguration of its first official supporters’ group in Africa, the Peña Tanzania-Carbayones, based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The initiative brings together local fans who have adopted the club’s traditional blue colors, forming a new community that connects the Asturian side of Spain with East Africa.
The supporters’ group reportedly began organically in 2024 through connections between a Spanish volunteer and local football fans, gradually evolving into an officially recognized peña with around 20 members.
Meetings take place at local venues such as La Roca Pub in Dar es Salaam, where fans gather to watch matches and celebrate the club’s identity.
Club observers view the expansion as part of a broader strategy of building international fan engagement through organic, community-based growth rather than traditional large-scale marketing campaigns.
Real Oviedo, historically known for its strong supporter ownership model following its financial crisis in 2012, continues to leverage its narrative of resilience to build emotional connections in new markets.
The club has previously expanded its presence into other international regions, including the United States, and sees emerging football markets like Tanzania as an opportunity to grow its global identity.
The development reflects a wider trend in football where clubs outside the traditional elite are seeking global relevance by cultivating localized fan communities rooted in authenticity and cultural connection.
