VfL Wolfsburg has officially unveiled a new club identity built around the return of its historic battlement crest, bringing one of the club’s most recognisable symbols back into its branding strategy.
The move comes at a delicate sporting moment for Wolfsburg, with the club still battling to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga. That context gives the redesign added significance, turning the crest into more than just a visual update — but also a symbolic return to the club’s roots, identity and regional heritage.
According to the club, the battlement crest never truly disappeared from supporter culture. Although absent from the official brand identity in recent years, it remained deeply connected to fan symbolism and stadium culture.
The updated design blends traditional elements with a more modern structure, reconnecting Wolfsburg’s industrial history and local identity with the club’s future positioning. The crest also reflects the historical relationship between the club, the city of Wolfsburg and automotive giant Volkswagen.
Wolfsburg stated that the redesign process involved months of consultation with supporters, club executives, the supervisory board, city representatives and external stakeholders. The project was presented as a collaborative effort aimed at strengthening the bond between the club, its fans and the wider Wolfsburg community.
The transition to the new identity will happen progressively rather than immediately. Wolfsburg confirmed that the current logo will remain on playing kits until at least the 2027/28 season.
Meanwhile, the historic crest will gradually be introduced across communications, stadium environments and other club assets. The phased rollout is designed to avoid disruption to sponsorship agreements, merchandise cycles and existing commercial operations.
