Buffalo Bills set opening date for new Highmark Stadium

Buffalo Bills have confirmed the opening date of their new home, with the franchise set to debut the $60,000-capacity New Highmark Stadium on September 17, 2026.

The team will host the Detroit Lions in Week 2 of the NFL season on Thursday Night Football, a game that will be streamed exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

The new venue, designed by architecture firm Populous, replaces the original Highmark Stadium, which hosted its final regular-season game in January 2026 after serving as the Bills’ home since 1973.

Construction on the stadium began in June 2023 and has followed a three-year development timeline. A key milestone was reached in April 2025 with a topping-out ceremony marking the completion of the structural steel framework.

The Bills organization has highlighted several modern features of the new stadium, including seven sensory rooms designed to improve accessibility and fan experience. These spaces will be available on all levels of the venue and accessible to all ticket holders, making it one of the most inclusive stadium designs in professional sports.

The original Highmark Stadium is scheduled for demolition in 2027, though fans were previously given the opportunity to purchase memorabilia and seating elements as part of a legacy preservation program.

The new stadium joins a wave of major NFL infrastructure projects. It will be the first newly opened NFL venue since Allegiant Stadium and SoFi Stadium debuted in 2020. Additional upcoming stadium projects include developments for the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, and other franchises across the league.

The Bills enter the 2026 season having won their last four home openers, continuing strong on-field momentum as they transition into their new state-of-the-art home.
